Frank Gehry unveils plans for his first building in Australia

World-renowned architect Frank Gehry on Thursday unveiled plans for his first building in Australia, a state-of-the-art business school to be built in Sydney.

The 16,030 square meters business school building for University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) will cost 150 million U.S. dollars and will be spread out over 11 floors.

Gehry said the building at Ultimo, Sydney of Australia, will have a "tree-house" design, incorporating a core structure, with "branches"spreading away from it.

The building will feature a wrinkly facade built using a combination of brick and glass.

"The hardest thing to do with modern architecture is make it human, give it character, give it feeling," Gehry, the Pritzker Prize- winning architect of projects including the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao told ABC News on Thursday.

"Historically the great artists of our history have always been fascinated with the fold. Michaelangelo did many drawings, Leonardo Da Vinci did many drawings on that topic, and I've been fascinated with that topic."

According to UTS vice-chancellor, Professor Ross Milbourne, the business school will be officially named after its benefactor, Australian-Chinese businessman, Dr. Chau Chak Wing, who donated 20 million U.S. dollars for the project.

Also, Gehry's partnership with UTS will have further benefits. Four UTS architectural masters students will undertake internships in Gehry's Los Angeles studio in U.S. early next year.

Construction on the building will start in 2012 and is expected to be completed in time for the 2014 academic year. It is a key part of the university's City Campus Master Plan.
